October: Salmon and Sea Trout
October can be a good month for trout fishing and daddies and hoppers are very popular flies at this time of year. Anglers should have a good selection of sedge, daddy and hopper style patterns (i.e. patterns with legs) in their fly box.
Angling reports from around Ireland suggest some decent runs of Grilse and Sea trout. Small classic shrimp patterns eg Foxford and Faughan shrimps, Bann Special and Apache are among the favourites.
In the bigger river systems like the Foyle which includes the Rivers Derg and Mourne large shrimp patterns in high water are still popular. See our salmon treble range which includes many patterns up to size 6 in trebles.
For sea trout, the Connemara Black with Jungle Cock, Goats Toe, Delphi Silver and Watson’s Fancy are all popular at this time of year.
On a recent trip to Connemara I had some success with sea trout with the booby patterns eg Bibio Booby and Sooty hopper booby fished traditionally on the top dropper.
Do please browse through our wide selections of fly tying materials and fly tying tools as we are all inspired at this time of year to tie the flies we see by the lakeside and river.
